Sara Taciani
Sara aided in the preparation of salt marsh soil samples. |
Visiting Scholars/ Postdoctoral research fellows
Dr. Sophie Comer-Warner
Sophie's research addresses the effect of global change on carbon sequestration and global cooling potentials of salt marshes. Her work investigates the response of salt marsh soil greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen cycling to predicted future changes in temperature and nutrient loading from salt marshes across a latitudinal gradient from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Her work is supported by a European Commission Marie Skłodowska Curie Global Fellowship funded by the European Union and is co-supervised by Dr. Sami Ullah and Prof. Stefan Krause at the University of Birmingham, UK. See Sophie's personal website at sophiecomerwarner.weebly.com/#. |
Ph.D. students
Andrea Price (2016)
Andrea's research examined Dinoflagellate cysts as indicators of water quality in Northwest Atlantic coastal waters. She was awarded fellowships from FQRNT and NSERC, as well as research grants from The Geological Society of America, the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists, and the Canadian Association of Palynologists. From her PhD she accepted an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship based at Louisiana State University. |
Dante Torio (2015)
Through his research Dante developed indices of wetland susceptibility to sea level rise and modeled the impacts of ‘coastal squeeze’ on wetlands, fish habitat and greenhouse gas emissions. He was the coordinator for our Commission for Environmental Coordination-funded project: North America’s Blue Carbon: Assessing Seagrass, Salt Marsh and Mangrove Distribution and Carbon Sinks. Dante went on to hold a postdoc at the University of New Hampshire's Jackson Estuarine Lab. Dante is now a scientist with the Chisasibi Research Centre on Eeyou (James Bay). |
Vera Pospelova (2003)
Vera examined dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and environmental factors controlling their distribution in New England (USA) estuaries. She was funded through NSERC and FCAR scholarships as well as a GSA research grant. in fall 2019 Vera left her post as a Professor at the University of Victoria for a new position at the University of Minnesota. |
M.Sc. Students
Wendy Ampuero Reyes
Wendy's M.Sc. research determined contribution of plant roots and rhizomes to soil volume in a St. Lawrence estuary tidal marsh. She also has had a chance to experience high tide on the Bay of Fundy! She was supported by a scholarship from the government of Peru. Anushka Sah Anushka’s M.Sc. research focused on how rice culture and aquaculture in West Bengal, India affect losses of carbon in mangrove soils. Jan Wollenberg (2017)
Jan's research examined the impact of salt marsh restoration on greenhouse gas emissions and blue carbon storage. He was supported by NSERC and FQRNT fellowships and won the award for the best graduate student oral presentation at the 2017 meeting of the Atlantic Canada Coastal and Estuarine Science Society. |
Paola Fajardo (2017)
Paola's research examined "Community-based mangrove management in West Mexico: Assessing the sustainability of small-scale selective wood harvesting". She was supported by a scholarship from the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT) and received additional funding through a Russell E. Train Education for Nature Program (WWF-EFN) Fellowship and Research Award. |
Bridget Rusk (2017)
While enrolled in McGill's Integrated Water Resources Management MSc Program Bridget conducted two research projects in support of our research on the nectar sources of the Maritime Ringlet butterfly. She analyzed our temperature records and developed a method to analyze blooming intensity from the photographic records provided by our citizen scientists on Chaleur Bay. |
Anna AgostaG’Meiner (2016)
Anna's research used palynological techniques to examine late Holocene paleoenvironmental change in Cuba. She was co-supervised by Prof. Matthew Peros of Bishop's University and is now working as a research assistant for Prof. Peros. Anna received a research award from the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists. |
Brittney Roughan (2014)
Brittney assessed greenhouse gas flux from salt marshes in Prince Edward Island watersheds with intensive agriculture. She was based at St. Francis Xavier University where she was co-supervised by Prof. Lisa Kellman. Brittney then became a Research Program Manager at Mount Saint Vincent University. |
Thomas Neulieb (2013)
Thomas's research aimed to parameterizing the carbon-14 reservoir effect in marine carbonates by extracting and dating pollen grains from marine deposits. He was co-supervised by Prof. Elisabeth Levac of Bishop's University. Thomas is employed as a geological technician with Grenville Drilling. |
Émilie Roy-Dufresne (2012)
Émilie developed a climate and environmental envelope for the white-footed mouse, which serves as a reservoir for the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. She was co-supervised by Prof. Virginie Millien of McGill's Redpath Museum. Emily left McGill to become a Ph.D. student at the University of Adelaide in Australia. |
Undergraduate students
Saida Jaime Elizondo
Saida helped us prep for various lab experiments and compile data on endangered species in Mexico’s wetlands. Charlotte Cockburn (2019)
Last year Charlotte was responsible for our measurements of organic carbon and ran loss on ignition on hundreds of marsh soil samples! She played a role in most of our lab projects. We wish Charlotte the best of luck as she begins her M.S. at Dartmouth! |
Farida Rahman (2017)
Farida was responsible for organizing this lab web page, preparing figures for journal publications and other types of electronic communications. |
